Generally speaking I am good at going with the flow. I do sometimes get bummed when something I really wanted to do has to take a back burner. On the bright side, it is for something else I really want to do. The helicopter parenting summary/write-up is now officially relegated to a (very small) collection of unfinished blog postings which will be drawn upon at some indeterminate time in the future. I may also look back at some posts I did in an "earlier blogging life" at a blog I officially called dead a few years back.
So what project am I doing instead? I need to work on the next program I am going to write. I have already written the Kids Ministry Check-in program for our church and modified it to work better over a high latency connection. It is working very well and is going to be demonstrated to a "sister church" of ours this coming weekend. It may finally get installed in a new venue! This application is more or less frozen developmentally until further notice. I will do bug fixed and high-priority patches as well as customizing deployments to specific locations, but no new functionality is planned.
This next program is being created under the name (likely final) of C.A.R.E. Management, or Contact, Activity, Resource, and Event Management. The initial release will not really do anything with Resources, but be primarily for Contacts and Activities/Events. the primary purpose will be to replace the Excel spreadsheet method of tracking attendance in the church services. The first follow-on module will be a module for a kids ministry to do check-in/out. Surprised? Yeah, I didn't think so.
Lessons learned from the first program should make the second one better from the start. It should also be easier to expand. I am planning to write the data access portion as a WCF Windows Service and the different modules (attendance, event planning, activity planning, kids check-in, reporting) as small independent client apps with a helper for the business logic, or at the very least different form trees of an app based on the app.config. In more plain English what that means is that I should be able to change the screens for one person, say the person doing the service attendance entry, without affecting the screens of any other person - like the senior high pastor. It also means that if I need to change something in the way the names and addresses are stored it would be able to be done without affecting anybody and the screens they get. Code manageability might be a little harder, but I think in the end it will be easier as fundamental changes in portions of the app will not break the rest.
So where is this great new app? Mostly in my head, but also in Visio. I have a data model in Visio that I feel ready to move forward with. I just need to take some time to sit down and start writing. First will be building the database and keeping track of all the scripts. I am doing it as a project in SQL Management this time which should be a HUGE help. Once that is done I start on the WCF Windows Service and the core business objects/logic/functions. This is a little backwards for me as I usually think in terms of the UI first and then building the infrastructure to support it. However, this infrastructure first method is better, and should result in a better end product.
