I was toastmaster at our meeting today. Names have been removed because it seemed right. The promised entry (to facebook friends anyhow) looking at the "Helicoptor Parent" stuff will be written soon. I just have to finish an upgrade on the Kids Ministry program for multi-campus usage first.
A brief walk through The Holiday Season.
"The Holiday Season." Each of us has had a different thought just now. The meaning of "the holiday season" is personal. It will vary not just between us Toastmasters, but also between us and our family members. Some might have immediately thought of snow, others of family, and still others of gifts, giving or receiving.
While many of us likely consider one holiday more than the others at this time of year, the holiday season encompasses multiple holidays. The U.S. Fire Administration defines the winter holiday season as December 1 through January 7. In China it is considered to run from the Winter Solstice (around Dec 22) to the Lantern Festival (Jan 15th). In the US most people consider it to be the time from Thanksgiving to the day after New Years. Historically US retailers have started their holiday advertising around Halloween. More recently retailers have been pushing October 1st here, and even up to early September in some Australia. Whatever you feel to be the exact length of the holiday season it will likely be more than a month.

Many stores have their holiday decorations and sales already running by the end of October. Personally, I really feel the holiday season does not start until November. Some may disagree, most notably children. In our neighborhood the stream of kids is fairly constant on Halloween night. They come through the neighborhood with their parents following driving lawn tractors pulling trailers. Until we moved a couple years back I had never seen anything quite like it. The parents hang out on the trailers chatting and enjoying a beverage or two while the kids hoof it from house to house. I do not remember ever really thinking about "the holidays" during Halloween and in all truth I do not know if those kids think of them either. However, my job is not to judge. For that I trust our team lead by the General Evaluator _________
SPEAKER
The first half of November is one of preparation in our household. Any holiday travel has been planned. We know where we are going when to see family, for the most part. We also start racking our brains to try and decide what people might be interested in receiving for Christmas. This is a big part of many people's November. Stores are pushing holiday specials, commercials are spouting the latest gadgets by people in green tunics surrounded by fluffy white powder. Our household does not start decorating the house for Christmas yet. That happens at a later holiday - Black Friday. First we look to Thanksgiving. While the heart of Thanksgiving might be to remember what we are thankful for and reflect on that it, for us it is about family. Well, family and food; often with football thrown in for good measure. In America many see this as the start of the eating season with many social gatherings to follow, but those are later in the season. Right now we will try to talk about what we are thankful for. Today I think we should all be thankful for having a dedicated speaker.
As the end of the year is coming near, we start to consider resolutions or options for the New Year. Health and Wellness as become the new buzz words in the media, government, and at DRC. Knowing what to do and what is good for you can sometimes be overwhelming.

When the relaxed event of Thanksgiving is over some rush to the stores for Black Friday, or more recently online for Cyber Monday. At our house we put up Christmas decorations as that will be our next holiday. Not everyone shares that though. Some people celebrate Hanukkah, which is really the next holiday on the list, happening before Christmas. More recently Kwanzaa has been celebrated by some. This starts immediately after Christmas and runs to the New Year. I would be remiss if I did not also mention the Winter Solstice. There is evidence it has been celebrated much longer than any of the others we have mentioned thus far. As the holiday season winds down many people like to take a little time to reflect, party hard, or some combination of the two. New Years is both a time of letting go of the old and grasping the new. Many resolutions for change are made – some are even reasonable! The actual change of the calendar year is observed by many younger people in a state of heightened inebriation. As we age we tend to need to set alarms if we want to observe the precise moment our journey of approximately 585 million miles loops to start again. Closing
After the New Year and resolutions that come with it we all try to "get back to normal." Come to think of it, maybe that's a big part of why resolutions always seem to fail. In any event, the celebrations are over and it is a long month and a half until Valentine's Day. The holiday season is over. The parties have trickled to a stop. The family has all gone home. After Christmas sales are over. The vacation bank at work is almost empty and, for us anyhow, the busiest season is going to start, like it or not, in just a few days. Hopefully the year starts on a peaceful note. How could it not at least feel that way after the craziness of the holidays? Many look forward to the year with hope. Hope that it will be better than the last, or that some event will finally happen. Some look back to the holiday season they just left and wish that just this once, it might go on a little longer. It is with this final thought I leave you. The holiday season is a good solid two months long, cherish every moment of it lest you feel it is over before it begins.
