Version 1.3 of the Kids Ministry Secure CheckIN program is done. Minor changes to this version were mostly for enabling a Kids Ministry Coordinator more autonomy in maintaining the system.
Read More It is done. I have completed the check in program for kids ministry to the point that I could set up and teach it to the average Kids Ministry director in a short time. They would then have the ability to print the name tags, service attendance sheets, and do simple attendance reporting. They could also modify the lists of classes, services, and allergies. I have SQL scripts for the creation of all tables and stored procedures used by the program. It has been tested as working on two computers at the same time. The total supported computers is dependent on the SQL server's capabilities.
I am going to make a page for it on the site somewhere so it is available for download. I think th page will contain contact info, a donation link pointing to my paypal account, and a comment section.
In the form it now has I would not feel bad getting paid by people for the program as well as getting it set up. However, it is not the end-product I would like to provide for churches and other non-profits as an alternative to expensive contact and event management systems. The program was architected to be written fast. The result of that is a program architecture that will be difficult to integrate in the larger program I want to create. The trade-off is that I did provide a final product much more quickly than a "proper" environment would have provided one.
When I create the larger product I will start with contact management and add event management as I go. I have already spent more time on design and architecture than I did previously. I intend to actually write up requirements, let them sit for a couple days, and then come back to review them. I figure I can also work with Tracy in the church office to get an idea what she thinks would be good when I am further along.
This is the next personal programming project I am going to pursue. By next I mean after getting a new look going on the family website though. I have updated to the latest 4.x version of DNN and plan to stay with that for a couple of years. A new skin design in the next few weeks will have this place looking like a whole new website.
